[dropcap]U[/dropcap]pper Nile – Fighting between the two warring parties, SPLA (IO) and SPLA (IG) have resumed in Upper Nile’s Manyo County as goverment forces carried out an offensive against the opposition forces in Gabat, southern part of the County HQs Wedakona.
In a press statement imparted to Wangdunkon Media, the SPLA (IO) blamed the fighting on goverment forces pointing out that the later are violating the CoHA.
“Today August 19, 2015, the government forces attacked our position this morning around 6:00AM in Gabat, North of upper Nile state two days after SPLM/SPLA Chairman and Commander-in-Chief Dr. Riek Machar Teny and other stakeholders signed an agreement in Addis Ababa” ~ Dickson Gatluak Jock Nyuot, the SPLA-IO deputy spokesperson said in a statement to Wangdunkon Media.
“The government forces launched multiple attacks on our positions in Gabat, aiming to CAPTURE our military base in Kwek and the surrounding garrisons but our forces under Command of Brigadier General Joseph Gai Galuak repulse them back this afternoon, inflicted heavy losses on government forces” ~ Gatluak explained
Nyuot also accused the goverment forces of planning more attack particularly on Taiyar Island of Panyijiar County
“….the Government is also in plan for further attacks where it sent barges mounted with heavy weapons on them to attack Taiyar Island in Panyijiar, Adok port in Leer and Pom in Pangak” ~ He continued.
This fighting followed the recent fighting in Pageri payam of Eastern Equatoria’s Magwi County when the opposition forces claimed the control of the Payam. both sides have trade accusation on each other over who carried out the offensive which led to falling of Pageri to the SPLA-IO forces on Tuesday 18th, August 2015.
This latest fighting which occurred just a day after President Kirr refused to sign peace agreement in Ethiopia has further increased the international pressure on the later “to be serious” in signing peace within the 15 days period to end the 20 months long conflict in the world in youngest nation.
