Heavy gun fire reported in Malakal

Malakal – A heavy gun fire exchange which have been said to be between the government forces in Malakal and the IO forces on the west bank of the Nile in Lelo was reported yesterday evening at around 6:30pm and continued until midnight.

According to some goverment sources in Malakal, the heavy shooting and shelling occurred when a group of suspected SPLA-IO soldiers were moving close to the river Nile adjacent to Malakal city.

However, some sources contacted by Wangdunkon Media in UNMISS PoC in Malakal revealed that the shooting first started when some SPLA (in goverment) soldiers were suspected of defecting to the armed opposition forces and that they were communicating with the said forces whom they said were not far from Malakal town to receive them.

Wangdunkon Media is yet to independently verify what exactly triggered the late evening intensive shooting in Malakal.
